David Blackmores' artist statement & biograph.
Artist statement
Originally I trained in photography, over the past few years my practice has broadened to incorporate additional mediums.
I make work that presents views of life exclusive to the current epoch, the result of modern, social & global concerns. I am specifically interested in the idea of control & limitations encountered within daily life. My work is the visual manifestion of an internal resistance against these restraints and the resulting work forms a muted acknowledgement of its existence
Biography
Aside from his own artistic practice David works part time as a Senior lecturer at the University for the Creative Arts. Blackmore has also guest lectured at a number of institutions including the University of Westminster [London] and the Institute for art, design and technology [Dublin].
In 2007 Blackmore was mentored by artist/academic Grace Lau. More recently David received a portfolio award during the Bratislavan month of photography and had a solo show at the Central European House of photography in Bratislava. Blackmore’s current series of drawings ‘Borrowed from my bank’ were published in Holland by the newspaper nrc.next last November.

Cracked LCD's [working title] 2008-09 work in progress, more coming soon.
Project description and introduction
In ‘Cracked LCDs’ Blackmore has been photographing broken Liquid Crystal Display Screens from the latest digital devices such as laptops, phones and cameras; technologies that play a large part in our modern daily routines. These digital forms have almost completely replaced analogue technology in industry and are fast replacing analogue forms in photographic art. Produced using solely traditional photographic equipment, Blackmore’s work catalogues and questions the place of obsolete technology in art and contemporary life. Technical notes David dismantles and removes the screens from collected devices. He then solders copper wires on to the connection points, in order to illuminate the screens. To date David has been experimenting with two analogue production techniques. Screens are either photographed using a large format camera or the LCD screen itself is used as a positive slide from which large cibachrome prints are made. Print sizes Print sizes are restricted due to maximum size of cibachrome paper. 40 x 30 inch / 101.6 x 76.2 cm These images will be exhibited as large-scale prints in order to confront the viewer with images that do not appear to be photographic but seem to be digital constructed images.
'Borrowed from my bank' 2008-09 - work in progres, more coming soon
Project description and introduction
“Unfortunately I, like the majority of people, owe money to banks. After a visit to one of these institutions I took one of those pens given away to customers. When I got home I began to work out my monthly in-comings and outgoings, rent, travel, food etc.. with the intention of forming some kind of repayment plan. I got frustrated and looked down at the pen I was writing with; the branded blue pen from the bank. Printed on the spine of the pen was the phrase ‘Borrowed from my bank’. Given my current financial situation ecoomic situation in general I found this to be irritating almost as if the banks were laughing at me. I then decided to see how much ink I could get out of each pen from the banks. I started to fill in each square on A3 graph paper until the ink ran out. I wanted to see if I could fill the page or not. In the same way I try to stretch my wages and balance debts each month. As I progressed through my experimentation I decided to start using the language of the banks. I began to replicate graphs of personal debt, designs found inside envelopes from banks and those inside envelopes obscuring pin numbers while in the postal system. All these primary research sources form part of how banks communicate with us and the visual language they use to do this. The pens as objects themselves are integral to the project, each page was made using a specific pen and the title of each work is the slogan found on the pen. In an exhibition each page would be framed with the corresponding pen but in a printed context I decided to photograph the pens in a similar vein to the images banks us on their leaflets, posters ect…”
